What is Mindfulness by Mel Maldonado
There is a huge buzz around being “Mindful” and the power of knowledge. How does it work? Should I just start diving into every piece of information to make sure I know all the ins and outs.
The way I have seen it, and bare with me here, so you start a new job and you have your first experience at it. Then you want to know more. What do you do? You study and begin to realize what will help in the particular profession and work at it. Everyday getting more comfortable so that you may move up to further yourself, right?
Well, why do we not do that with ourselves? Shouldn’t we be the CEOs of our own mind?
I truly believe that we get so caught up in this world that everything going on around us happens faster than the time it takes us to truly appreciate something. Days often fly by without us really talking a moment to reflect on what happened. This is just living without existence, but to live and be present takes mindfulness.
Steps to a mindful life: Numero uno, PAUSE ! Just like in a video game, something important comes up. What do you do? PAUSE. Or a really epic challenge arises, you PAUSE. This can be practiced daily.
Numero dos, recognize your feelings. Even if they are negative, feelings are our mind way of giving us information to process and hopefully respond as opposed to react. It is unrealistic to have butterflies and rainbows floating around all the time. But if we PAUSE and recognize what is going on, we allow the moment to captivate our full attention.
From there we move to Numero tres, have grace with yourself as you explore this new journey. I am sure everyone has heard, things will not change over night. So please be kind to yourself while on this adventure and enjoy every milestone that comes with it. Some days you might do better than others, but see if you can start out small by taking three minutes in the morning. From there, incorporate these little bits of time throughout your day.
With each step you will allow yourself to experience life and all its beauty. Have fun and enjoy your time on this earth to the full capacity through mindfulness.
